In 2020, the pandemic created more than 50 billionaires, including the inventors of vaccines. In stark contrast to the past: a vaccine was then a common good and its inventors did not make a fortune. Unprecedented profits, made thanks to a major crisis. This, thanks to orders for billions of doses of vaccines purchased by states. But also thanks to the financing of these pharmas, biotechs and equipment manufacturers: most of these private groups are listed on the stock exchange, or entered in 2020. In the lower world, people have become poorer and poorer. COVID-19 has made the super-rich richer. Everyday I wake up I’m poorer!
Investors are purchasing shares in order to profit from the surge in sales of Covid vaccines, vials to transport them, or medical equipment and treatments. With the Covid, founders and investors have become the new billionaires of health, thanks to the meteoric rise of their stock market shares. This issue of unprecedented enrichment in the context of a public health crisis raises concerns about the evolution of our economies and the values they represent.
Health was in the public domain at the turn of the century, and vaccines did not allow their inventors to enrich themselves. Vaccine development has shifted to the private sector in the last fifty years, enrichment during crises has become unrestricted, and manufacturers have benefited from billions of dollars invested by private investors. What is less well known is that they have also benefited from public funds. Private entrepreneurs are making billions of dollars in profits in the Covid market, thanks in part to private investors, but also to taxpayer-funded public funding.
